What the Flock? A new Web Browser with the lot?

The "Trouble and Strife" is blogging!

My wife is blogging over at MSN Spaces. She is a Pram/Stroller aholic and in order for her to get a new stroller, I told her she had to start/work on her blog! Why? Because I know she would:

A) Like it
B) Be great at it
C) Get the pram anyway

So I believe she is going to put a lot of great Baby and Child tips and tricks and experiences. We are not perfect parents by any means but Lid actually has a history in childcare (going back to Baby sitting as a 12 year old) to working in Child Care centers and now raising to great boys (well most of the time there great, see her post on Teething).

If you have any baby questions, don't hesitate to ask her, I am sure she would love to answer them (if she know the answer).

Adam Curry at it again!

Remember Adam Curry. I put out my thoughts on his smoking hints in his show (Is it just me or do others think that Adam Curry is advertising for the Tobaco industry?)

I have also mentioned in the past about his lack of transparency (The Malone Show - Episode 5). Well he was a bit cheeky today. He has a new sponsor, Logitech. But doesn't have that up front. He reads out the information about the speakers that he is advertising and then at the end of the whole thing he says something like:
Oh, and of course Logitech are sponsoring the show.

How the hell are we meant to know. And then this or something like it (which is a gem): "If it was crap you know I would say so".

Hmmmmm..... Do we Adam?
Think there is something in this for all of us!

The Podcast Network do deal with Motorola

Well Done Guys. This is huge for them and us, the Podcast Network listener. Why is this important you might ask? Well it means that these guys (Cam and Mick) will be able to keep the network growing, it means that they can keep the network free for the listeners and grow the network to get more great shows on to the Network.

New Version of Qumana released. AdGenta integration is the big feature!

Got word from Tris over at Qumana that the latest version of Qumana was ready. Have got it and am trying it out.

One of the big features is its integration with the AdGenta, a new kind of ad that works on the principle that it is keyword based (and so safe to use with contextual ad networks like Google Adsense). An Example of the type of ad follows (I am sure you will all want to come and work in Australia (beautiful 23 today and we have Aussie Rules Footy as well!):

Is the first MediaCast Network being announced today?

Cam and Mick, co-founders of The Podcast Network have hinted for a while that they could be doing something to do with video/MediaCasts. They also have just done a server re-organisation and have mentioned that they have a big (might have said huge) Announcement today. But what could it be?

Perhaps it is that their going to take the wraps off the worlds first (to my knowledge anyway) MediaCast Network (i.e. video podcasts or video available via RSS).

I did a little digging around and found an interesting fact. If you go to www.themediacastnetwork.com you will notice that its a parked domain at Go Daddy (a web hosting company). A little further digging finds that the domain is registered to "Noumenon Group".

Who the $#%$#$% is the "Noumenon Group"? Well a quick search on Google finds this link: Cameron Reilly (ex-Microsoft BizTalk Guru) starts BizTalk firm ...

Well we're one week into our campaign to make sure anyone googling for BizTalk service in Australia will find my new company and I think we've done well, with a lot of help from our friends. A week ago when I googled the words "biztalk" and "australia" I found mostly references to tech magazines on the first page of results.

That new company: The Noumenon Group!

So stay tune. I believe there is an announcement today and I wonder if this might not be it!

Followup on Reel Review Radio and Netfilx. Michael proven wrong.

A while ago on my old blog, I examined a case of Blog Whinging in which, Michael Geoghegan of Reel Review Radio (and now author of a Podcasting Book) was having a whine about how he was rejected by Netflix (I believe they do video renting over the internet) for the Affiliates program (after seeing his original post on Robert Scobles Blog). The message seemed to be an automatic message and offered an email address to sort it out. Michael at this stage hadn't take Netflix up on their support offering to contact them directly, instead he decided to use his blog to bad mouth Netflix (and advertise the fact that he went with Blockbusters program).

At the time I suggested to him that this was the wrong use of blogs and that an easy way to sort this out would be to actually just write an email to Netflix and find out for sure why his site was rejected. He did do this at the time.

Recently he did. I discovered when I went to visit his site and see if he had any mention of the Wallace and Gromett movie that I had recently seen (which I didn't find). But what I did find was that he had a ruddy big Netflix ad on his site. I used his contact page to ask if he had emailed them but later found an entry in his blog on this.

In the entry, he said the following about the why he was rejected:

"After about a week I heard back, and sure enough I was turned down for a reason not stated in the email. Because of an answer I had given regarding downloads - we serve podcasts here - I was automatically rejected. "

Fair enough. But went on to say this as well:

"I still stand by my belief they could have done a better job communicating originally. However, the second time around they were great at communication; they took the time to explain it all and actually apologized for the inconvenience."

As at the time, I disagree with Michael. The first time they may have missed something out of there email, but at least they took the time to email you and let you know that they were unhappy (i.e. didn't accept his application) and offered him a right of reply to show why they were wrong and/or ask why they rejected him. Michael didn't take the same courtesy to Netflix by returning their email and asking at the time what the problem was. As I pointed out at the time, the time take to return the email would have been the same or less to reply to Netflix as it was to whine about them on his blog.

I hope this little case study shows the impertinence of giving people/companies the chance to put things right rather then just having a good old fashion whine from the outset. Companies normally want to please their customers, so if you treat them right, they will treat you right. To me it isn't as important that companies make mistakes, its more important the way they deal with problems and on this occasion, Netflix were first class. Reel Review, not so good!

Discuss: cameron reilly: Two million Aussies on broadband isn't enough

Cameron Reilly (Co-founder, CEO, Executive Producer, {Insert Random Title here} at The Podcast Network ) wrote about Australia's take up of Broadband and blamed Telstra's Policys for the lack of take up.

cameron reilly: Two million Aussies on broadband isn't enough:

"The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced yesterday that there are almost 2.2 million Australians on broadband, in other words, about 10% of the population. To put that into a global perspective, as of December 2004, according to the OECD broadband report, ten countries already had >10% broadband penetration. You can bet those numbers have improved in the last six months."

He had some people who commented, including "Wilson" that included this Comment on the plans available and the downfalls:

"Granted, several ISPs offer plans with uncapped usage, or usage limited by throttling, but that's still not enough (and uncapped usage tends to be too expensive). Trust me, nothing cools someone's enthusiasm so much as having to keep an eye on a traffic meter."

My Comment: Yeah, but half the people with there "on a traffic meter" do so because they are downloading illegal movies and music off the internet. I guess it would be nice if the cost was less but it doesn't seem to be effecting the pirates as aren't we one of the worst country's in the world for downloading illegal stuff?

I can remember going to the Whirlpool Bigpond forum and see threads about who can download the most before being capped (back when Bigpond's cap wasn't a hard cap as it is now

Perhaps the spotlight should be on the Users that abuse the system and stuff it up for the rest of us.

To quote Darrein Hinch: "SHAME SHAME SHAME".

I feel Naked today! (No iRiver today)

As I say, feeling a bit naked as I forgot to bring my iRiver H320 to work today. I normally listen to Podcasting on it during the day just to have a little noise in the back ground. One of the Podcasts that I have been listening to lately is (Cool) Shite on the Tube.

These guys are 4 guys and a girl in Launceston, Tasmania Australia do movie reviews of normally two Movies and a TV Series DVD that are available. They have interesting discussions about them and the actors. One of the great things is that they talk about a lot of Movies that are a little left of center and that most people would never heard of. A lot of foreign films.

I have this week tried one of there reviewed movies, Battle Royale. Its a Japanese movie and not in my normal taste. Its a little on the violent side. Basically I could explain the plot and what not, but hey, why not listen to the podcast as a) I haven't watched the whole movie yet b) they do it a lot better then I do (probably the reason there is no mollyzine-movie.blogspot.com!).

Check them out, and I will muddle through today until I get home to my iRiver!

Feedburner giving users option to Splice in Red Cross Ad

To Affiliate or not to Affiliate, What is the Question?

I recently have been pushing a product that I use everyday for Syncing up my iRiver with my Computer, mainly to update what Podcasts I have downloaded lately (using my podcatcher, GetRight). I wrote a nice little review (well I think so anyway) and have let people know about it. In the review I have linked to the site via my Affiliates link so that if you buy the product from my review, I get some credit (aka Dosh, Coin, Money). The Product is Allway Sync and my review is here .

My question is: Is this wrong? Is it wrong to push this out this way? If you notice this, do you get annoyed? Do you avoid the link? The reason I am doing it is to earn a couple of extra dollars to fund my software purchases. I don't expect to make a living out of it or anything, just a few extra bucks. I hope the guys at Allway do well as well, as there success means that they will continue to improve the product, and as a paid up owner of the product, I benefit from a better product.

But I am really think that I will try to get my sites to a Professional level (in some respects) even if there not in others. Give myself a chance that if someone does come a long that finds something that is interesting, and there might be something they would buy (i.e. a product like Allway Sync ) I have take advantage of it.

And I am starting to feel a lot better about it after reading people like Darren Rowse, the Problogger and listen to Adam Curry talk about making money from recommending tracks in his podcast. I was over at Accidental Hash and listened to that and CC Chapman seems to be pushing artists but also setting himself to get a cut, and you know what, that's great!

I think there is a question of being transparent and mentioning that you are going to benefit from recommending someone. It might be just me, but I feel better about peoples recommendations if I know they are up front about the fact that I am going to benefit from it. If they don't and I notice that its an affiliate link, I tend to ask the question "What are they hiding?" Especially when the present or blogger is really pushing it and pushing that their doing a service for the other person.

That's my thoughts on the subject, what do you think? Will be interested to know the probloggers out their think, after all they live and breath this type of stuff and get to play with it and judge success a lot more then I do.

Podsafe Music Network Bans Adam Curry?

Was reading on the Podcasting News site about the terms of use of the Podsafe Music Network. Here is a excerpt of that:

The Producer Terms of Use limit subject matter that can be discussed in podcasts that use the network's music:

8. You agree that a Broadcast or Music Podcast will not:

a. contain hate material, promote violence, discriminate based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, age, or family status, or contain any other materials deemed unsuitable or harmful to the reputation of PodShow or the Licensor;

b. promote or reference software piracy (warez, cracking, etc.), hacking, phreaking, emulators, ROM's, or illegal MP3 activity;

c. promote illegal activities, deceptive practices or violations of the intellectual property rights of others; or

d. be advertised or promoted through the use of unsolicited bulk email.

I thought this was interesting and wonder if anyone had written about the biggest sprucer and (my understanding) part owner/founder of the PMN (via Podshow), Adam Curry, and (to my mind his violations of these terms of agreement (on his Dailey Source Code). As it happens, someone had. Over at Mobilepodcast.org, there was the following titled post Curry Violates Terms of Service. Basically the post points to the fact that lots of Podcasts talk about pirating stuff (normally indirectly) and also mentions that Adam talks about smoking illegal substances.

This isn't the violation of the agreement that I was thinking. I was thinking of a bigger one. One that he whole heatedly promotes. One that is in just about every show! One that he freely admits and blatantly flaunts. What is it? Well look at point b & c:

b. promote or reference software piracy (warez, cracking, etc.), hacking, phreaking, emulators, ROM's, or illegal MP3 activity;

c. promote illegal activities, deceptive practices or violations of the intellectual property rights of others; or

You worked it out yet? Its the Mashups! He freely admits that these are in direct violation of the artists Intellectual rights. I wonder if Podshow will take any action against Adam (I bet not). I have actually asked them if they will be enforcing there agreement and will post a follow-up later!

Blogger and Includes - Can I have a standard Sidebar?

Question to the Smart Web Designers/HTML/Scripters/Blogger Has:

Is there a way to have a single lot of Side Bar code that is added to each of my blogs? I run 6 odd Blogger/Blogspot blogs (see sidebar) and its a pain editing the template for each one when I want to add a new feature to the sidebar. It would be nice to have one piece of standard code that each one accesses. I can make all the code in there standard so it doesn't matter which blog it is one. I use this method as I am to cheap to pay for a paid sight (young family, tight with the money) and blogger is a nice system just doesn't have categories (Come on Google, whens this coming?).

Any help appreciate.

Feedburner and My Improvement - Better Flickr Feeds!

Read the review of Feedburner over at WorkHappy.net. Good little read about Feedburner done by Carson McComas. One of the categories that he used in his review was "What could be improved?" He said about the performance of the stats. To me one thing I would love them to do is have a Flickr option.

They have lots of options but one I would love to see is the ability to setup a feedburner feed that would then setup Enclosure tags so that a podcather/image catcher could download the the photos automatically. But more then this, it would be great if it some how gave the option to decide which size of the photo was available for download.

Could this be done? I would have thought so! The photo's ( as I understand it) all have a unique identifier. When you go to a pictures page, one of the (many) options available is to have a look at the picture is an array of different sizes (see example here). The URL of each of these photo sizes seems to be controlled by and extra parameter, size (go figure). Here are some examples:

Small: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=35389330&size=s

Medium: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=35389330&size=m

Large: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=35389330&size=l

Original: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=35389330&size=o

So surely it would be a matter of choosing the correct size parameter to add to the feed and then feedburner would make the image to be downloaded the same parameter through out the file.

I would have thought this would have been a trivial thing for the excellent developers at Feedburner. I guess the question is, am I the only one that sees this as useful?

Chris Pirillo (Chris has a great live show that he makes available as a podcast as well and runs the LockerGnome website and runs the Gnomedex conference) over on his blog had a very, very cryptic post about putting a question to Ponzi (His Girl Friend). What could this question be? Could it be about the house they are looking at? Is it Ponzi having her own show/Podcast (lets hope this happens)? But I think, it’s that he popped the question and asked her to Marry him! Let’s wait and see.

Blogger for Word - My thoughts on Qumana's thoughts

Over at the Qumana Blog, there is an post about the new Blogger for Word toolbar and comparing it to there own offering. I have used the Qumana (and still will from time to time) and it’s not bad. I am currently in MS Word doing this blog entry and really liking it. The fact that you have all the Word features well you’re doing the editing (even if some of the features (i.e. images and tables) don’t work when posting. They also had on the posting a list of comparative features: Blogger Qumana Drag n’ drop gathering of microcontent No / maybe Yes Multi-blog publishing No Yes Multiple windows for multiple posts No Yes Image uploading No / maybe Yes Image resizing No Yes Light No / maybe Yes Fast Yes Yes UPDATE (the formating above is out of whack and it might be better to check out the Qumana blog). This is a really unfair and biased analysis (especially when the title of the post was “Imitation Is The Best Form Of Flattery”, if I understand it saying that Google/Blogger was trying to be like them). Well, this is a bit rich seeings as there product doesn’t even handle Blogger titles! Also, the Blogger toolbar supports having one account for all your Blogger blogs and you choose the one you wish to post to when you publish the post (way cool for my setup). Another point on this list, I think the Multiple Windows for Multiple Post is wrong. They have Word not handling it but it does. (Not that I have tested it) You can have multiple instances of Word open at once. Also, I notice there was no mention of getting old posts off the server. Blogger is a yes in this Category, Qumana is only no / Maybe. They said there latest version is meant to have is feature but I tried it and was less then successful (but I could be doing something wrong). So in conclusion, I personally like it (and at the moment will be using it) but my moods change on Blog posting apps, so who knows? Plus Qumana have some stuff in the works, so let’s see what they have (it will have to have Blogger Titles for me to return!). Plus lets see what changes in the Blogger toolbar. AGGHHHHH I keep getting this Skype Entry!

AGGHHHHH!!!!!! I keep getting the post on the Skype Blog about them having a Research group!!!! I would estimate having it show up 20 to 30 times in my Outlook folder (brought in by the every fine product, Newsgator). I understand this is partly my own fault because I have the option to have modified entries show up as new, but enough is enough. Did they really change it that much? Doesn’t matter now as I have updated the settings so that the modified entries in the Skype Blog don’t show up as new but just wanted to have a bit of a whine (don’t want anyone to do anything about this, just wanted to vent!). Molly PS: You can Skype me at Mollyfud UPDATE (even before the initial post): Seems that it is caused by some protection of email addresses changing the html or javascript. As I say, this is fair enough but bloody annoying. Official Blues Traveler Web Site I reported back on my old blog that Blue's Traveler (great blues band) had put up some of there live concerts on their website for free download. Well I was on their site today and found that they have now have a podcast described as: The Blues Traveler Podcasts are highlights of the monthly bluestraveler.com live music releases downloaded automatically to your digital music player. I have just added this to Getright's new podcatching feature (buy Getright Pro Here or look at it here (please choose the US option if you decide to purchase after coming from my link) or Trial Getright (Download Manager with Podcatching ability) here) and can't wait to listen to it! My Favourite Download Manager now doing Podcatching

I have been using Getright (please use US option if you choose to buy, Ta) as a Download Manager for some time now. Although it was freeware, I did in fact buy a copy as I use it so much. It has a lot of the normal features of a download manager:

Multi-threaded downloads - i.e. Downloads multiple parts of the item to be downloaded
Detects Clicks in the Browser to add to the download list
Resume Downloads - Will resume (if downloads origin supports it) the download after a lost connection
Automatic Filing of files based on certain Criteria
Scheduled regular downloads
The list goes on.

But just recently, a Pro version (in beta currently) was produced that added things like uploading and Podcatching. I have been using the Podcatching feature for a while now and it does a very nice job. It has a single screen with the list of subscriptions. The Page shows the Title, Time last checked and place where the downloaded files will be stored.

In the Subscription pages for the Podcasts, it allows for user name and password, Allows to play files when done, schedule the frequency of the downloads (including by time and day of the week or fixed duration), Add to play list in Windows Media Player or iTunes and lastly Filtering (only certain files or exclude certain files). The interface could do with a little work and it would be nice if it supported opml but very nice.

If you want to merge your Podcatcher with your download manager, GetRight Pro would be the way that I would recommend this one (and I use it myself).

"iPod technical Support" stumped!!

Well from the highs of July 17th when he made his declaration to today when he is stumped by a new iPod and getting it working. He asks "Any Ideas??".

I say get an iRiver! Apart from anything else it does Video (well the International iRiver H320 does!) and that could be important in the near future if Mick's (Cam's partner in crime at The Podcast Network) comment on this post about whether video delivered by RSS is a Podcast is any indication!

Boys, perhaps you could have a feed in iRiver H320 ready?

Big Brother Australia is Podcasting!!

Cameron Reilly over on his blog was commenting on questions like: “Are you concerned that the entry of the ABC and Austereo into podcasting is a threat?” He goes on to say (basically) that anything that brings listens to Podcast is good for his business as even if they star by listening to the Radio stations (he throws away the line that they won't subscribe to them, not sure if he is saying there no good or that its not the normal way that these listens would want to listen to them. If it is the there no good, I would throw up John Safran and Dr Karl as examples of good radio highlight shows that are now podcasts).

But on MSM bringing people to podcasting, it should be noted that today the Australian Big Brother has released a podcast! This will surely be another drive of people to podcasts. SCOBLEIZED!

Well, last night I noticed in my Referrals stats that I got a hit coming from Robert Scoble (the Scobleizer's) weblog. Thinking that it must have been one of the comments I made, I went to check it out. To my absolute surprise, I had been linked to by Scoble. How cool is that. The link was in reference to the my comments on the recent Dell Conversation. Just to clear it up, I agree that Dell should be listening, but more to find what their customers want and need (i.e. Marketing and Product Development) rather then to Solve individual problems (i.e Tech Support). Mark Cuban on Podcasting and TPN's Cameron Reilly Commenting

Mark Cuban, Internet Billionaire and owner of the Dallas Mavericks NBA Team has a good point (that I think many already know) and that's that very few people are going to make money podcasting. He compares it to Streaming in the 90's and Cameron Reilly, Co-founder and Executive Producer (I guess when your co-founder you can make up any titles) of The Podcast Network throws his 6 cents in on the differences.

Perhaps Cameron could try and get Mark on G'day World and maybe even the boys at the NBA Show could get him on their show.

Dell tells bloggers to go away - Good on them!

Robert "Scobleizer" Scoble the famous blogger/video blogger (with Microsoft's Channel 9)/Podcaster (well, he is famous but I think his son Patrick over shadowed him) had a an interesting post on his blog today,Dell tells bloggers to go away. Firstly I think he supports that Dell is doing the wrong thing by not responding to the bloggers but I strongly disagree. The main blog is this one -Call our tech support (referring to Computer maker Dell).

I say good on you Dell. No way should blogs be an method to log a Tech Support call. Dell give you a method to log your calls, give you plenty of information on there website. You can call, email and I am sure (maybe only for larger customers) that they have a web interface. So why should they get bullied into watching every web page on the web, in case one of their customers just happen to own the site and just happen to have a problem.

I am not sure Microsoft does that? If they do, perhaps Bob could let us know if we just write the post or if we have to have tags or what? What are the rules for searching? I work for Progress Software in Technical Support. What should I be searching on?

The simple answer is that I shouldn't. That's the truth. Companies should put good Technical support procedures in place and that should be the way that companies should contact them. If your not happy with the service your getting, fine blog about it (its helps others make up there mind), but don't do it in an effort to have the problem resolved. Do the right thing and go through the right method.

For fitness of course! Well if you are, perhaps you should have a listen to the latest Health Podcast over at the Health Show. Ms Marnie talks to the hosts about how its a much more fun way to do normal exercises. She also talks about her business Body and Pole in Melbourne, Australia. Even if you have no intention of doing the class, its another case of how many Podcasts are just a good listen.
